Answer:

Let distance between P and Q = x km.

Suppose the two trains meet after y km.

By the time they meet the 1st train has traveled 100 km more than the second train.

==> y = (x - y) + 100.

==> y = x - y + 100

==> 2y = x + 100

==> y = (x + 100)/2

P and Q travel towards each other at a speed of 50 km/hr and 40 km/hr.

==> (y/50) = (x - y)/40

==> 40y = 50(x - y)

==> 40y = 50x - 50y

==> 40y + 50y = 50x

==> 90y = 50x

==> 90(x + 100)/2 = 50x

==> 90x + 9000 = 100x

==> x = 900.

The distance between P and Q is 900 km.
