Explanation:

Given 2 wattmeters measuring the power input to a 220 V 3 phase circuit indicate 110 kW & 50 kW respectively. Calculate total power input.

  • We need to find the total power input.
  • So Given W1 = 110 KW
  •                 W2 = 50 KW
  •     So W1 – W2 = 110 – 50
  •                          = 60 KW
  •         W1 + W2 = 110 + 50
  •                         = 160 KW
  • Now we have
  •                     tanφ = √3 (W1 – W2) / W1 + W2
  •                              = √3 x 60 / 160
  •                             = 0.6495
  •              So φ = tan^-1 0.6495
  •                       = 33.003 degree
  •              Also Power factor = cosφ
  •                                             = cos33
  •                                            = 0.838
