Answer :

C. Both Discharge tube and Crookes tube.

Explanation :

William Crookes in 1879 used a glass tube sealed with electrodes at both ends. The glass tube is made vaccuum to reduce the pressure in it. These tubes are commonly called as discharge tubes. They are also called as Crookes tube.

When voltage of 10,000 volts was applied, the following results were observed :

  • When the pressure inside was 1 atm, no current flowed between the electrodes.

  • When the pressure was reduced to 10^-2 atm, the current started flowing. A coloured glow is the character that helps us identify whether there is a flow of current or not. The colour depends upon the gas.

  • When the pressure is reduced more to 10^-4 atm, no glow is observed but the current flows. To check the flow of current, a perforated anode is used. By using the perforated anode, we can observe greenish glow on the glass wall, where a fluorescent material is coated e.g. zinc sulphide.

The current passing from canode to anode was named as cathode rays. This way electron was discovered.

Electron was said to be the fundamental particle that carries one negative charge and mass as 9.11 × 10^-28 g.
