the term cell was coined by Robert Hooke.Hooke had discovered plant cells .He saw a series of walled boxes, reminded him of the cells of a monastery. Hooke actually saw was the dead cell walls of plant cells .

Robert Hooke, an English scientist, discovered a honeycomb-like structure in a cork slice using a primitive compound microscope. He only saw cell walls as this was dead tissue. He coined the term "cell" for these individual compartments he saw.
The generally accepted parts of modern cell theory include: All known living things are made up of one or more cells. All living cells arise from pre-existing cells by division. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms.
