Answer:
Mahmud of Ghazni
Mahmud of Ghazni (reign: 998–1030 AD) was the son of a slave who became a ruler of Ghazni—now Afghanistan. He was a prince and warrior who rose to prominence as the first sultan of the independent Ghaznavid Empire. The Ghaznavid Empire at its greatest extent would control the area that is now Afghanistan, eastern Iran, eastern Uzbekistan, northern Pakistan, southern Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, after it succeeded its former suzerain—overlord—the Samanid Empire. The Samanid Empire was a Sunni Persian state that held most of the Ghaznavid land until Mahmud conquered it from the fracturing Samanids. After consolidating his power in the west, Mahmud began a series of devastating raids into northern India, beginning in 1001 with his invasion of Peshawar and culminating in his raid of Gujarat in 1025.
