cow, like all herbivores animal , eats grasses and other plants material . plants contain cellulose, which is very hard to digest (even for a herbivorous animal).

so, when a cow swallows some grass, the chewed grass first enter the compartment of the stomach called the rumen. the cud is swallowed again and it re-enters te rumen.
