Answer:

Let 1 woman do the work in x days.

Let 1 man do the work in y days.

Therefore,

1 woman's one day's work=1/x part

Therefore, 2 women 1 day's work =2/x part

1 man's 1 day's work = 1/y part

Therefore,

5 men 1 day's work=5/y part

By question,

2/x +5/y =1/4

2 *1/x +5*1/y=1/4

2u +5v =1/4 [Taken 1/x =u, 1/y=v]

8u +20v=1-------i

Similarly,

3/x +6/y=1/3

3u+6v=1/3 [Taken 1/x =u, 1/y=v]

9u +18 v=1---------ii

By elimination,

i *9---72u +180v=9------iii

ii *8--72u +144v=8------iv

- - -(as the sign changes)

iii -iv -------- 36v=1

v =1/36

Putting 1/36 in eqn ii, we get,

9u+18*1/36=1

9u *1/2=1

9u=1-1/2

9u=2-1/1

u=1/18

Therefore,

1/x=u

1/x=1/18

x=18

And,

1/y=v

1/y=1/36

y=36.

Therefore one woman takes 18 days and one man takes 36 days to finish the work...
