In the southern most end of Telangana lived a small farmer named Raamanna in a village. He only owned half an acre of land. He depended on rain to grow his crops as his land was far away from Godavari and Krishna rivers and there were no channels to convey water from the rivers to his land. It only ever rained for a season from September to November. So he had to make most of it.
For the past four years he used to sow dry land rice during the rainy season. He borrowed money from a local bank to get agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and to pay labourers’ wages.
This year was the same. He sowed dry land rice as usual, but this time rainfall was comparatively low. So rice yield decreased by a significant amount. He managed to pull through somehow and reached harvest. But the government did not offer Minimum support price for his crop, so he had to sell rice at a very low price to private buyers. In the end, he could not pay-off his loan and his economic status took a huge hit.
