2x - 3y = 2 ...(1)

2x + y = 13 ...(2)

From Equation (2)

2x + y = 13

y = 13 - 2x ...(3)

put the value of y in equation(1)

2x - 3y = 2

2x - 3(13 - 2x) = 2

2x - 39 + 6x = 2

8x - 39 = 2

8x = 39 + 2

8x = 41

x = 41/8

put the value of x in equation (3)

y = 13 - 2x

y = 13 - 2 × 41/8

y = 13 - 41 /4

y = 52 - 41 / 4

y = 11/4

Hence Solution (x,y) = (41/8,11/4)

Answer: x=5.125

y=2.75

Explanation: 2x-3y=2………….1

2x+y=13…………2

Using substitution method

Make y the subject of the formula in …2

y=13-2x………….3

substitute …3 in …1

2x-3(13-2x)=2

Open the bracket

2x-39+6x=2

Collect like terms

2x+6x=2+39

8x=41

Divide both sides by 8

8x/8=41/8

x=5.125

Substitute x into …2

2(5.125)+y=13

Open the bracket

10.25+y=13

Collect like terms

y=13-10.25

y=2.75
