son age = ( y + 2 ) years

according to the problem given ,

father age = 3 times of the son age

x - 2 = 3 ( y - 2 )

x - 2 = 3y - 6

x = 3y - 6 + 2

x = 3y - 4 -------( 1 )

father age = 5 times of son age

x + 2 = 5 ( y + 2 )

x + 2 = 5y + 10

x = 5y + 10 - 2

x = 5y + 8 ------( 2 )

equation ( 2 ) = equation ( 1 )

5y + 8 = 3y - 4

5y - 3y = - 4 - 8

2y = - 12

y = - 12 / 2
