Only by testing the theories you can investigate if they are true. When you use different experiments to test a theory you usually find that there are circumstances in which it seems to apply but there are others that it doesn't apply. This can lead to the theory being modified.

For instance, if you developed a theory that genes are the cause of mental illness and designed many experiments to test this theory in different samples and measuring many additional factors, you will find that some of your studies will support the theory but others will not. You would then examine the additional factors you measured and what you would discover is that certain genes only lead to mental illness in individuals who also have had a history of trauma.Based on this the theory can be modified to state that genes only predispose a person to develop a mental disorder but it is the environment (e.g. trauma) that actually triggers it.
