The mean is an appropriate measure of central tendency when data is not skewed. When the data is skewed we prefer median to mean.

(i)  Because of its unique value and can be used to compare different groups of data.

Ex: Marks of a student in 7 subjects:

      10,35,90,78,55,23,14

Mean = (10 + 35 + 90 + 78 + 55 + 22 + 14)/7

          = 43.4.

43.4 is the appropriate measure of central tendency.

(ii)

Ex: Marks scored by a student in 5 subjects.

 20,30,55,65,75

Median = 55.

55 is an appropriate measure of central tendency.

Hope this helps!
