A block of material weighing 500g at 100°C is dropped into 100g of water at 10°C. If the water is contaminated in copper calorimeter weighing 100g the temperature rises to 50°C. What is the specific heat of the material if the specific heat of copper 0.09cal/gC.

Specific heat of Cu is 0.09 cal/gm K.

Let the specific heat of the substance is s.

So,

Heat lost by the block=Heat absorped by the Caloriemeter+Heat absorped by the water⇒500×s×(100−49)=100×0.09×(49−12)+100×1×(49−12)⇒s=0.158 cal/gm K
