total angles in a triangle = 180

so :

  • x + y + 40 = 180

x + y = 140

diff between x and y is 30 degrees.

therefore,

  • x - y = 30

now add both the equations :

x + y = 140

x - y = 30

2x = 170 (both y's cancel each other)

x = 85

use x = 85 to find y

85 - y = 30

y = 85 - 30

y = 55

so in the end we get :

x = 85 and y = 55

hope I helped :))
