the custom of dowry has been prevalent in our society since time immemorial .the parents of the bride use to give certain items or money to the newly wedded couples so that they could start a comfortable life. however the form of dowry has changed nowadays .today the success of marriage is seen in terms of money and free gifts ,not in terms of happy and conjugal relations
the birth of a girl child is considered as a burden on the shoulders of the parents while the birth of the male child is considered as a blessing as it becomes a source of income to the family.this is one of the main reason of ignorance towards a girl child in the Indian society.
the parents of the girls have to face huge demands of dowry when they search for bride grooms .the demands of dowry are so high that their life long saving seems a drop in the ocean. if the bride's parents are unable to fulfill the demands of the grooms parents the bride has to face many problems. she is rebuked, insulted, abused and nagged in-her in laws. this results in suicides and divorce .
much has been said against dowry system but nothing has been done seriously by the government.the government should start an aggressive campaign against dowry system. government servants accepting dowry in cash or kind before or after marriage should we chargesheeted and terminated. it is a good steps taken by the government that is has declared dowry a social crime and economic offence against humanity. this Evil cannot be wiped out by laws and the steps taken by the government .the people must have awareness and they should remove this Evil from the society by themselves.
