2006) in this class . Can you, then, explain the
reason for water flowing from one direction to
the other? Why do the rivers originating from the
Himalayas in the northern India and the Western
Ghat in the southern India flow towards the east
and discharge their waters in the Bay of Bengal?

Explanation:

It is all because of the terrain of the country. Simply because of slope or gradient towards the eastern part of Bay of Bengal.

During the Himalayan formation and collision with the Eurasian plate creates a reverse force and eastern coast get declined and the western coast uplifted in some areas.

Rivers flow in the declining slope because of the gravitational pull, which leads to river flow towards the eastern coast of India.

The Himalayas and western ghats are the uplifted portion and their elevation is more than 2000 meters, so the rivers which originate from the southern part of the Himalayas and Eastern part or the Leeward slope of the Western Ghats get drains towards the bay of Bengal because of the gradient towards the Bay of Bengal or the eastern side.

Some rivers flow in western direction because of the water dived, which is higher landmass between 2 river drainage like Delhi- Ambala- Chandigarh which divides Indus river system and Ganga-Yamuna river system. Some rivers flow in western direction because they are flowing in the rift valleys like Narmada and Tapi.
