The condition of France was very poor before the revolution took place as the population was divided on the basis of estates.

the different divisions were -

1) clergy - they enjoy priveleges by birth .

2) Nobility- enjoyed priveleges by birth and enjoyed fedual privileges they were exempted from paying taxes to the state (1st and 2nd estate )

3) the third estate - ( the regular man ) - they composed nearly 80% of the population and gave all the taxes ( a ) big businessman , merchant , courts official , lawyer etc .

(b) peasant and artisans .

The French king at the time of the revolution king Louis 16 also raised the taxes and prices of grains to maintain the Treasury because of this act many people died from starvation.
