In the instances of serious injury where there is heavy blood loss, severe dehydration, major surgeries in which a patient is not capable of taking solid food, etc, she/he is given glucose via drip. Glucose helps in recovering from dehydration as well.
Glucose mixes in the blood instantaneously as it is in the soluble form. Since in patients, the breakage of food is slowed down due to illness, hence Glucose is given because it releases instant energy.
