(1) Leptotene - During leptotene, the chromosomes begin to condense and form a compact shape.

(2) Zygotene - In zygotene, homologous chromosome pairing initiates chromosomal synapsis, which is followed by the creation of a complex structure known as the synaptonemal complex. A bivalent or tetrad is a complex made up of two synapsed homologous chromosomes.

(3) Pachytene – Crossover of non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes occurs at the recombination nodules during the pachytene stage. At the crossing points, the chromosomes remain linked.

(4) Diplotene — Diplotene signals the disintegration of the synaptonemal complex and the separation of the bivalents' homologous chromosomes, save at cross-over locations. Chiasmata are X-shaped structures that occur during separation.

(5) Diakinesis - Diakinesis occurs when the chiasmata are terminated and the meiotic spindle is assembled to separate homologous chromosomes. The nucleolus vanishes, and the nuclear envelope disintegrates.
