25L of oxygen gas is reacted with 25 L of nitrogen gas at 35°C and 1.35 atm to produce nitrogen dioxide in the following reaction,

2O₂ + N₂ ⇒2NO₂

To find : the volume of nitrogen dioxide.

solution : mole of oxygen gas = no of moles of nitrogen gas = PV/RT

P = 1.35 atm, V = 25 L , R = 0.082 atm.L/mol/K , T = 35 + 273 = 308 K

so, n = (1.35 × 25)/(0.082 × 308) = 1.336 mol

from chemical reaction, it is clear that 2 moles of O2 react with one mole of N2 and gives 2 moles of NO2.

here O2 is available in limiting amount so O2 is limiting reagent.

now 2 moles of O2 give 2 mole of nitrogen dioxide.

so, 1.336 moles of O2 give 1.336 moles of nitrogen dioxide.

now the volume of 1.336 mol nitrogen dioxide = nRT/P

= (1.336 × 0.082 × 308)/(1.35) = 25 L

Therefore the volume of nitrogen dioxide is 25 L.
