Tipu Sultan has been aptly known as the Tiger of Mysore. Courageously he fought against heavy odds. The greatest ambition of his life was to drive the British off the Indian soil. For that one Ideal he sacrificed his life and Kingdom.Born in 1750 Tipu succeeded his father Hyder Ali at the close of 1782. The Second Carnatic War was in progress and Tipu was a lad of thirty. But he had already enjoyed a considerable experience of war under his father. He was fond of swift movement and unexpected attack in the battle. He was always in the saddle, almost a duplicate of Napolean for whom he had great admiration. A contact was established between Napolean and Tipu Sultan. When Napolean reached Egypt, it was indeed in response to Tipu Sultan. Tipu himself is acknowledged as the Napolean of India.Tipu fought many sanguinary battles with the British. He sent an embassy to Paris for French help. The Frenchmen in his service formed the Revolutionary Club—the first of its kind in India. Tipu himself patronized it.The French revolutionaries called him Citoyen Sipou. He was in regular touch with Pondicherry, the French India. He sent a mission to Mauritius seeking French recruits. The Governor of Mauritius invited Frenchmen to join Tipu for driving the British out of India. The Mauritius Proclamation and Napolean’s invasion of Egypt unnerved the British. The British dispatched an ultimatum to Tipu and launched a causeless war in which Tipu died sword in hand on May 2, 1799. He was out-manoeuvred by the British in his struggle for Indian Independence.

Tipu Sultan who was also known as Tipu Sahab and the "Tiger of Mysore" ruled the Mysore Kingdom from 1782 to 1799. He was the son of Hyder Ali (ruler of Mysore). He was also a philosopher, warrior and poet. He introduced a number of legislative reforms during his reign some of them include his coinage, a new calendar, and a new system of land revenue. He is considered to be as a pioneer in the practice of rocket artillery.

The vast empire of Tipu included the territories of River Krishna in the South, the Eastern Ghats, and the Arabian Sea on the West. He built a Church on the request of the French. He made an alliance with French to fight against their common enemy, British. Tipu Sultan not only fought against the foreign invasions to save his motherland but he fought against some of the Indian rulers who gave direct support to his foreign enemies, for instance, British-allied Travancore in 1789. Moreover, he fought a series of wars with the British army commonly known as the Anglo-Mysore Wars. He successfully crushed the invasion of foreign enemies (British) in the First and the Second Anglo Mysore Wars and prescribed terms to the British in the following Agreements of Madras and Mangalore individually.

He was a ruler who could not be defeated individually thus, the British East India Company made an alliance with the Nizam of Hyderabad and Marathas to defeat Tipu. Therefore, Tipu became a martyr while defending his fort of Srirangapatna from this alliance.
