Complete Question:

An old man makes a will to divide his property among his wife and two sons such that his wife gets half of the total amount received by the sons. His younger son gets a third of total amount received by his wife and elder son. If his wife gets Rs. 60000 worth of property more than the youngest son, Find the total value of the property of the man .(In lakhs of rupees)

Answer:

The total value of the property of the man is 7.20 lakhs

Solution:

Given that,

Let the amounts received by the old man's wife be "a"

Let the amount received by eldest son be "b"

Let the amount received by youngest son be "c"

His wife gets  half of the total amount received by his wife & the elder son

According to this condition,

a = \frac{1}{2}(b+c)

2a = b + c

Add "a" on both sides

2a + a = a + b + c

3a = a + b + c

a = \frac{a+b+c}{3}

His younger son gets a third of total amount received by his wife and elder son

c = \frac{1}{3}(a+b)

3c = a + b

Adding 'c' on both sides

3c + c = a + b + c

4c = a + b + c

c = \frac{a+b+c}{4}

his wife gets Rs.60000 worth of  property more than the youngest son

Therefore,

a - c = 60000

\frac{a+b+c}{3} - \frac{a+b+c}{4} = 60000\\\\a+b+c \times ((\frac{1}{3} - \frac{1}{4})) = 60000\\\\a+b+c \times (\frac{1}{12} )= 60000\\\\a+b+c = 720000

Thus the total value of the property of the man is 7.20 lakhs
