A laboratory thermometer is placed in a
liquid and a rise in the level of mercury
thread is observed and found to be steady
at a certain level. But the level of mercury
decreased on taking it out of the liquid.
What can be inferred
(i) The liquid is at a higher temperature
than the surrounding temperature
(ii) Heat is gained by the mercury on
placing it in the liquid
(iii) Matter expands on heating
