When acid react with base, it produces a salt and water as shown in the reaction below:

base + acid = salt + water

NaOH + HCl = NaCl + H2O

According to reaction, 40 g of base gives 18 g of water.

That means 2 g of base would give 18 X 2/40 = 0.9 g of water

According to reaction, 1 equivalent of acid or base would give 1 equivalent of water (18 g).

So obviously 2 g of base or 3 g of acid would provide same amount of water (0.9 g).

Then, the equivalent weight of acid is 3 X 18\0.9 = 60

Equivalent weight of acid is 60.
