When 2g of ferrous sulphate which are green crystals heated,they first loses 7 molecules of water of crystallization and become white in colour being called as anhydrous ferrous sulphate. And this anhydrous ferrous sulphate then decomposes on further heating to give ferric oxide,Sulphur dioxide and Sulphur trioxide gases.

A smell of burning sulphur is produced in this reaction due to the formation of Sulphur dioxide gas .
