Equation (1) can be written as:

= 3x = -y - 1

= x = -y - 1/(3)  ------ (3)

Substitute (3) in (2), we get

$2 \frac{ - y - 1}{3} - 3y + 8 = 0 \\ 2( \frac{ - y - 1}{3} ) - 3y = - 8 \\ 2 ( - y - 1) - 9y = - 24 \\ - 2y + 2 - 9y = - 24 \\ - 11y = - 22 \\ y = 2$

Substitute y = 2 in (1), we get

= 3x + y + 1 = 0

= 3x + 2 + 1 = 0

= 3x + 3 = 0

= 3x = -3

= x = -1

Therefore the values of x = -1 and y = 2.
