Let the total number of soldiers be x.

No. of soldiers killed = 3/5 of x

                                 = 3x/5

No. of soldiers captured = 1/5 of x

                                       = x/5

No. of army soldiers left = 10,000

Total no. of soldiers = 3x/5 +  x/5 + 10000

=> x = 3x/5 +  x/5 + 10000

=> 5x = 4x + 10000

=> x = 10000

Total no.of soldiers = 5x

                               = 5 × 10000

                               = 50000

Ans. = There were 50,000 soldiers in the army.
