Given info :  A bycycle tire has volume of 600 cm³. It is inflated with carbon dioxide to a pressure of 80 psia at 20°C.

To find : how many grams of CO₂ are contained in there ?

solution : volume of tire , V = 600 cm³ = 600 mL = 0.6L [ ∵ 1 cm³ = mL = 0.001L ]

pressure of carbon dioxide , P = 80 psia = 80 × 0.068 = 5.44 atm [ ∵ 1 psia = 0.068 atm

temperature, T = 20° C = 20 + 273 = 293 K

using formula, PV = nRT

⇒ 5.44 atm × 0.6 L = n × 0.082 L.atm/mol/K × 293K

⇒ n = (5.44 × 0.6 )/(0.082 × 293) = 0.136 mol

we know, molar mass of carbon dioxide = 44 g/mol

so the mass of carbon dioxide =  mole of carbon dioxide × molar mass

= 0.136 × 44 = 5.984 ≈ 6 g

therefore the mass of CO₂ are contained in the tire is 6 g.
