Redox Reactions.

Answer :

Oxidation number method :

Step-1 : Identify atoms which undergo change in oxidation number in the reaction.

Step-2 : Calculate the increase(↑) or decrease(↓) in the oxidation number per atom and multiply it by number of atoms undergoing that change, if increase or decrease is not equal then multiply by suitable number to make them equal.

Step-3 : Add H+ (if medium is acidic) or OH- (if medium is basic) on the appropriate side so that the total ionic charges of reactants and products are equal.

Step-4 : Make the number of hydrogen atoms in the expression on the two sides equal by adding H₂O to the reactants or products and finally check the number of oxygen atoms.

Balanced redox reaction

\boxed{ \bf{ \purple{8H^++Cr_2O_7^{-2}+3SO_3^{-2}}} \longrightarrow{ \orange{2Cr^{+3}+3SO_4^{-2}+4H_2O}}}

Cheers!
