When we burn the Mg ribbon it simply means the reaction between Mg and Oxygen.
Thus Mg reacts with O2 to form MgO and hence Mg is oxidised

It can be understood by the following reaction:-

2Mg + O2 -----------> 2MgO
(Magnesium Oxide)
