3) If the breadth of the rectangle is increased by 3 cm and the length is reduced by 2 cm, its area

will be increased by 20 sq cm. If the breadth is reduced by 2 cm and the length is increased by

1 cm the area would be reduced by 24 sq cm. Find the length and the breadth of the rectangle.

Let length be x and breadth be y

then area a =xy

given

(x - 2) \times (y + 3) = a + 20

xy - 2y + 3x - 6 = a + 20

a - 2y + 3x - 6 = a + 20

3x - 2y = 26 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: (1)

Also given

(x + 1)(y - 2) = a - 24

xy - 2x + y - 2 = a - 24

 - 2x + y =  - 22 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: (2)

solving (1) and (2) we get

length = 18

breadth =14
