Fossil fuels get their name because they are literally made from fossils — dead organisms (mostly plants) that didn't decay because they were squashed under water or mud with no oxygen. When we burn fossil fuels today we release the solar energy that was originally captured by photosynthesis millions of years ago.

There are three types of fossil fuels which can all be used for energy provision; coal, oil and natural gas. Coal is a solid fossil fuel formed over millions of years by decay of land vegetation.

Carbonization (or carbonisation) is the term for the conversion of an organic substance into carbon or a carbon-containing residue through pyrolysis or destructive distillation. It is often used in organic chemistry with reference to the generation of coal gas and coal tar from raw coal.
