Answer for your question is given below:

(note: Big X is multiplication symbol, Small x is letter x)

Let the original price of sugar be Rs.x/kg

Reduced price of sugar= 80 percent of x.( Since given that price reduced by 20 percent)

Reduced price of sugar=

80/100 (=4/5 when simplified) X x = 4x/5

Now the quantity of sugar person can buy for Rs.36 when cost is Rs. x/kg is 36/x kg.

Similarly, the quantity of sugar, person can buy for Rs.36 when the cost is Rs. 4x/5 Kg is:

36/4x/5 kgs

Given that, due to decrease in price of sugar, person was able to buy 500gm (1/2 kg) extra sugar.

=36/4x/5 (=9 when simplified) = 1/2

=9X5/x - 36/x = 1/2

=45-36/x = 1/2

=9/x = 1/2

x=18

Answer= The original price of sugar is Rs. 18 per kg..
