HERE ARE THREE TRIBES THAT REFLECT THE FASCINATING DIVERSITY OF INDIA’S HERITAGE:
1. THE BHILS TRIBE
Around 39% of Rajasthani tribals are made up of the Bhils, they are indeed the largest tribe in the whole of South East Asia. They are famous for their skills in archery and were traditionally fierce in battle such as in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. They have a rich cultural history and love dance and music. Ghoomar is the most famous dance among the Bhils. You can explore their cultural pursuits at the Baneshwar fair every year in January and February.
2. THE JARAWA TRIBE
The Jarawa Tribe of the Andaman Islands
is one of the most remote tribes in India. Their culture has been untouched by outsiders for years which has allowed their society and traditions to stay intact. They hunt animals and fish with bows and arrows, gather fruit, collect wild honey from their forests whilst singing songs to express their joy. They subsist completely on the forest habitat. Jarawa tribes are a mirror to the ancient times in India but increasing interaction with the outside world such as poachers is threatening their existence and leading to decreasing numbers.
3. THE MALDHARI TRIBE
The Maldhari Tribe are nomadic tribal herdsmen who live in Gujarat. They live in small mud houses deep in the forests, with no electricity, running water or schools. Their jewellery and clothing in particular, portray the Maldharis’ sense of identity and tradition. Men wear gold hoops and buttons in their ears and the women’s ears are folded and stretched with a large amount of hanging silver.
