3. Ravi-travelled 40 km upstream. If his speed in still
water was 3 km/hr less and the speed of the stream
was 3 km/hr more, he would have taken 6 hrs more
for the trip. Find the time taken for the upstream trip.

Speed of the stream =3km/hr

Upstream time = 6hrs

Downstream time = 4hrs

Let the distance between the two parts be x km

Down speed stream=x/4 km/hr

Upstream speed= x/6km/hr

Speed of stream=1/2(x/4-x/6)

=1/2(3x-2x)/12

=x/24

Speed of stream =x/24 =3x =72km

∴ Distance is 72km
