The Ryotwari Settlement of land revenue collection was introduced in the Madras and Bombay Presidencies.

It was introduced by the then Governor of Madras, Sir Thomas Monro in 1880. 'Ryot' means 'peasant cultivator'.

As per the Ryotwari system of land revenue collection, the peasants themselves were regarded the owners of the land and the government collected taxes from them directly. Although this system lacked middlemen like the zamindars, the peasants had to pay a high rate of tax (50 percent in drylands and 60 percent in wetlands) in cash, and no concessions were made.

Apart from Madras and Bombay, it was also introduced in Assam and Coorg.
