Answer:

Alcohol and phenol can be distingiushed by :

1)Litmus paper test

2)Fecl3 (neutral) test

Phenol is acidic in nature but alcohol is not acidic. Again, in FeCl3 test phenol reacts with FeCl3 to give violet coloured complex compound, but alcohol does not react with FeCl3.

Option (b) is the correct answer that is neutral FeCl, test

The distinguishing test between alcohol and phenol is done by neutral FeCl3 test

Explanation:

  • With neutral ferric chloride solution, phenol gives violet colour while alcohol will not give any color.
  • FeCl3 test or  Ferric Chloride Test:
  • Phenols usually give a violet colour when react with the neutral FeCl3 test.
  • Here when we dissolve the given organic compounds in water.
  • In the next step, we add a neutral solution of ferric chloride very slowly in  dropwise way.
  • Here we observe the change in color from a red, blue, green or purple colour which indicates the presence of phenol.
