The total Bengal army rose in revolt. Everywhere in northern and central India, the revolt of the Sepoys was followed by favored revolts by the civilians, especially the peasants and artisans.  The main centers of the revolts were Meerut, Delhi, Kanpur, Jhansi, Azamgarh, Allahabad, Agra, and western Bihar.  

There was a revolt in Orissa, Assam, Maharashtra, Sindh, Rajasthan, Hyderabad and Punjab etc. Thus almost all regions of the country were involved in an attempt to free India from the British rule. The Indian patriots fought bravely but lost. The revolt was crushed by the end of 1858.
