(17 September 1879 – 24 December 1973), also known as Ramaswami, EVR, Thanthai Periyar was a Dravidian social reformer and politician from India, who founded the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam.[2][3][4] On the caste system in India, Periyar dealt harshly with the practice of discrimination and its subordination of the different levels it created in society. He attacked those who used the system to take advantage of the masses through exploitation and subjugation.
At a young age Venkata Ramaswamy witnessed numerous incidents of racial caste
and gender discrimination. He was also called by his followers as Periyar. He was a
businessmen, politician and social activist, who started the, Self-Respect Movement
also known as the Dravidian Movement and proposed the creation of an
independent state called Dravida Nadu comprising South India. Periyar joined the
Indian National Congress in 1919. In 1924, he noticed that at one of the feasts
organized by nationalists, they followed class distinctions which let him to
disassociate himself from the Indian National Congress. He propagated the principles
of rationalism, self-respect, women’s rights and eradication of caste.
