Solution: Let the current ages of the father be F and that of the son, S.

Three years ago their ages were (F-3) and (S-3) and the sum was 48, or

F+S = 48+3+3 = 54, or

F = 54-S …(1)

(F+3) : (S+3) = 3:1, or

F+3 = 3S+9, or

F = 3S+6 …(2)

Equate (1) and (2): 54-S = 3S+6, or

4S=48, or S = 12 and So F = 42.

The father is 42 years and the son 12 years, now. Answer.

Answer :-

Let us assume that, Father present age is F and son present age is S years .

so ,

3 years ago :-

→ (F - 3) + (S - 3) = 48

→ F + S - 6 = 48

→ F + S = 54 ---------- Eqn.(1)

3 year after :-

→ (F + 3) / (S + 3) = 3/1

→ F + 3 = 3S + 9

→ F - 3S = 9 - 3

→ F - 3S = 6 ---------- Eqn.(2)

Subtracting Eqn.(2) from Eqn.(1),

→ (F + S) - (F - 3S) = 54 - 6

→ 4S = 48

→ S = 12 years .

then,

→ F = 54 - 12 = 42 years .

therefore,

→ F - S = 42 - 12 = 30 years (Ans.)
