To find:

What was the discount the  retailer offered?​

Solution:

Let the cost price of each mobile handset be "x".

So, the C.P. of 8 mobile handsets for Rakesh was = "8x"

After the retailer gave a discount to Rakesh,

The C.P. of 10 mobile handsets = "8x" ..... (given in the question)

∴ Now, the C.P. of 1 mobile handset for Rakesh will be = "$\bold{\frac{8x}{10}}$" = "$\bold{0.8x}$"

Therefore,

The discount that the retailer had offered to Rakesh was,

= $\frac{x - 0.8x}{x}\times 100$

= $\frac{0.2x}{x}\times 100$

= $0.2 \times 100$

= $\bold{20\%}$

ALTERNATIVE METHOD:

The S.P. of 10 mobile handsets = The M.P. of 8 mobile handsets

∴ The S.P. of 1 mobile handset will be = The M.P. of $\frac{8}{10}$ mobile handsets

We know,

Discount % = $\frac{Marked\:Price - Selling\:price}{marked\:Price}\times 100$

∴ Discount % = (1 - 8/10) × 100  = $[1 - \frac{8}{10}] \times 100 = \frac{10 - 8}{10}\times 100 = \frac{2}{10}\times 100 = \bold{20\%}$
