GIVEN

The sum of three consecutive whole numbers is 153.

To Find

The largest number.

SOLUTION

  • Let the first number be x.
  • Let the second number be x + 1.
  • Let the third number be x + 2.
  • Sum = 153

According to the question,

\large\implies{\sf{x+(x+1)+(x+2)=153}}

\large\implies{\sf{x+x+1+x+2=153}}

\large\implies{\sf{3x+3=153}}

\large\implies{\sf{3x=153-3}}

\large\implies{\sf{x=\dfrac{150}{3}}}

\large\implies{\sf{x=\dfrac{\cancel{150}}{\cancel{3}}}}

\large\therefore\boxed{\bf{x=50.}}

The whole numbers are:-

  1. x = 50
  2. x + 1 = 50 + 1 = 51
  3. x + 2 = 50 + 2 = 52

VERIFICATION

\large\implies{\sf{50+51+52=153}}

\large\implies{\sf{153=153}}

\large\therefore\boxed{\bf{LHS=RHS.}}

So, the largest whole number is 53.
