The diagrams of species in which the central atom is having an incomplete octet, expanded octet and that of an odd electron molecule are attached below.

(a) Species in which the central atom has an incomplete octet

Octet rule is not obeyed in some compounds which are electron-deficient. For instance, LiCl, AlCl₃, BeH₂, BF₃, etc

(b) Species in which the central atom has an expanded octet

Certain compounds have more than eight valence electrons around the central atom and are termed as super octet molecules or having expanded octet. Examples- PCl₅, SF₆, IF₇, etc

(c) Species in which an odd electron molecule is formed.

The octet rule is not satisfied for all atoms that have an odd number of electrons. For instance, nitric oxide, NO, and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)
