you have been given that secA + tanA = p

you know that

sec^{2} \alpha  - tan^{2} \alpha  = 1\\\\\is.   the.    same.   as\\(sec\alpha  + tan\alpha )(sec\alpha  - tan\alpha) = 1

now replace secA + tanA with p

thus

(secA - tanA) x p = 1

secA - tanA = 1/p
