Answer:

(i) Water

(ii) 1.81

Explanation:

i) The speed of light in a medium is inversely proportional to its refractive index. So the Medium having higer refractive index will have less speed of light in it. Hence light moves faster in water.

ii) Absolute Refractive index of water = 1.33

Absolute Refractive index of diamond= 2.4

Refractive index of diamond with respect to water

=

 \frac{2.4}{1.33}

= 1.80

The correct answer to the following question is given below -

(a) The refractive index of water with respect to air is 1.33, whereas of diamond it is 2.4.

  • Since the refractive index of a medium is equal to the ratio of the speed of light in that vacuum to the speed of light in that medium. So, the more the value of the refractive index is less, the speed of light in that medium.
  • Therefore, in water light moves faster.

(b) Given: refractive index of water with respect to air is 1.33

the refractive index of diamond with respect to air is 2.4

To find: refractive index of diamond with respect to water.

Solution: refractive index is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in that medium.

μ = c/v ( c is the speed of light in vacuum, v is the speed of light in medium)

The refractive index of diamond with respect to water = refractive index of diamond with respect to air/ refractive index of water with respect to air

      = 2.4/1.33

     = 1.8

Therefore, the refractive index of diamond with respect to water is 1.8
