In an AC Circuit if current lags behind voltage means the circuit impedance is more inductive.

The power factor is a measure of active power ( useful power ) w.r.t apparent ( total ) power . To make utilize the apparent power fully in the form of active power, we need to balance the proportion of inductive and capacitive elements in the circuit.

If a circuit have more inductance we need to input/ connect capacitance ( complimentary to inductance ) in proportionate value, so that we get 100 % power factor.

Now inductance will mostly add in series, since capacitors exhibit complimentary properties to inductance, we should connect to capacitors in parallel to inductors ( inductive part - load ) to theoretically nullify the effect of inductance in the circuit.
