Srinagar, Sep 16: When members of Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) visited Kashmir last week they had to face volley of questions from carpet manufactures here on its role in the promotion of Kashmir Carpet Industry.
An apex body of exporters of handmade carpets and other floor coverings in India, CEPC was visiting Kashmir first time in its history. “Conditions were not appropriate in Kashmir for CEPC to visit. But now things have improved a lot. We have come to address the problems of Kashmir carpet exporters and artisans,” chairman CEPC Ashok Jain told Greater Kashmir on the sidelines of the meeting CEPC held with Kashmir exporters and artisans.
Jain said Kashmir carpet industry was one of the biggest industries in India and it needed to be promoted at a larger scale for the sustenance of local economy and for its recognition at the international market.
The CEPC, Jain said, visited Kashmir to invite carpet exporters and artisans of Kashmir to the upcoming international Carpet Expo at Varanasi starting from October 17.
“J&K is a traditional handicraft state famous for its exquisite and high quality hand knotted silken, woolen, artificial silk carpets. The Kashmiri carpets are matchless in design, color composition and looks and they have their own identity and image. But I feel Kashmir exporters lack exposure at international level. The fair will provide much needed platform for Kashmiri exporters to understand the demands and trends of the international market,” Jain said.
He said: “There is no doubt that Kashmir Carpet industry has faced depression during past 17 years but now it seems that conditions are changing in the Valley. The need of the hour is aggressive marketing of Kashmir made products and I feel participation of local exporters in national and international level will help them to revitalize the traditional industries in Kashmir.”
The CEPC, Jain said, received number of complaints here about non-implementation of different schemes in carpet industry. “We had a detailed discussion with members of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) about the non-implementation of the schemes. And, we assure the artisans and exporters to take the matter with the authorities concerned at the highest level,” Jain said.
About misuse of Kashmiri brand at international market, Jain said it was the responsibility of importers at international market to ensure that Kashmir brand was not misused. “From our side we keep a regular check that Kashmiri brand is not misused. The beauty of the word Kashmir is that once attached to any product, its market value increases in both domestic and international markets. The responsibility also lies with the Kashmiris to ensure quality production in carpet industry that are second to none and maintain the standards of Kashmir brand,” Jain said.
The CEPC, Jain said, was thinking of organizing an International Carpet Expo fair in Kashmir in coming two years. “The holding of fair in Kashmir will be an attempt to attract the attention of international customers towards Kashmir carpet industry as more than 95 per cent of carpets manufactured in Kashmir are exported to foreign countries,” Jain said.
Jain had also some suggestions for union government. “If the authorities want that carpet industry should flourish in the country and survive the tough competition at international level, they need to exempt the industry from VAT/sales tax,” Jain said.
He said proposed buyer-seller meet to be held by KCCI later this month was encouraging for carpet industry and artisans should participate in the meet.
