$\frac{3x}{5x + 2} = \frac{ - 4}{1} \\ by \: cross \: multiplication \\ 3x = - 4(5x + 2) \\ 3x = - 20x - 8 \\ 23x = 8 \\ x = \frac{8}{23}$
