Assertion : The numerical ratio of displacement to distance is equal to one or less than one.

Reason : Displacement is a vector quantity and distance is a scalar quantity.

explanation : Displacement is the minimum seperation between two points. it doesn't depend on path. This is because displacement is a vector quantity. it has direction. it can be found by the difference of final position to initial position.

distance is the length of path covered by a particle. it depends on path of particle. this is because distance is a scalar quantity. it doesn't have direction.

[so reason is correct]

in straight line path of a particle,

distance = displacement

in non linear path of a particle,

distance > displacement

from explanation of both terms it is clear that

|displacement| ≤ |distance |

⇒|displacement|/|distance| ≤ 1 [ so assertion is correct]

here assertion and reason both are correct also reason is correct explanation of assertion.

Answer:

It is a fact that the magnitude of distance can never be zero, but displacement can be, at the most, the magnitude of displacement and distance can be equal. Therefore, the numerical ratio of displacement to distance is equal to one or less than one. Displacement is a vector quantity and distance is a scalar quantity. This is true, but it is not the correct reason for the above statement.
