Sexual imprinting , when an animal learns to distinguish what an appropriate mate looks like to avoid inbreeding, occurs in goats, zebra finches, and pandas. Imprinting behaviour is defined as the psychobiology in which animals learns certain behavious at  a particular age or a particular life stage.

Explanation:

Imrinting can be explained by several examples and few are as following:

  1. Filial imprinting - It is type of imprinting in which  in which a young animal shows their social preferences to their parent only as a result of being introduced to that object. for example:  nidifugous birds, they try to imprint their parent and follow them while flying.
  2. Sexual imprinting - The process in which yound animals learns more about sexual characteristics and attracted to the desirabe mate. For example: male zebra finches shows their sexual imprints for the female bird which rears it.  
  3. Limbic imprinting - Some of the experiences related to prenatal, perinatal and post-natal leaves imprints on the limbic system of an animal that causes a long effect of animals life that is called limbic imprinting. For example:  baby elephants are trained in circus for long time.
  4. Westermack effect - This effect can be defind as when two people live together for for first few years in the life, they (either one) will become  less sensitive to the sexual attraction with the same person.  For example: prairie dogs avoid sexual mating with the resident close dogs.
